Harvard’s Kelly Yenn Wins Big at NCTTA Nationals, On and Off the Table
The latest episode of the NCTTA “Off The Table” podcast gave fans a deeper look into one of college table tennis’ brightest stars, Harvard’s Kelly Yenn. Fresh off her second NCTTA Women’s Singles National Championship, Kelly shared insights into her mindset, training, academics, and life away from the table.
What stood out most during the conversation was Kelly’s approach to the mental side of table tennis. Rather than focusing on emotions during tight matches, she explained how she simplifies her thinking by concentrating fully on the next point and the tactical decisions in front of her. That approach helped her survive a dramatic quarterfinal match where she was down 10-8 in the third game and only one point away from elimination before storming back to win the title.
Kelly described table tennis as addictive because of the constant tactical adjustments between players. Every point becomes a chess match of serves, returns, anticipation, and counter-adjustments. Viewers of the finals could clearly see that analytical style in action during her thrilling championship match against Rachel Sung, where long rallies and tactical changes defined the contest.
Away from competition, Kelly is equally impressive academically. A Harvard student with a growing interest in neurotechnology and brain-computer interfaces, she discussed the potential of technology to help patients with paralysis and neurological diseases regain movement through advanced machine learning and neural imaging systems.
The interview also highlighted the balance many collegiate athletes face between academics and elite competition. Kelly explained that her training intensity increases closer to major tournaments, while still maintaining focus on her studies. Her background with the Hong Kong National Team helped shape her disciplined approach to improvement and preparation.
The episode showed exactly why college table tennis continues to grow in popularity. Players like Kelly Yenn combine high-level athletic skill, tactical intelligence, and academic excellence while representing their schools with pride.
At Paddle Palace, we love seeing the next generation of players pushing the sport forward both on and off the court.
