Table Tennis Robots & Tables Guide
Table Tennis Robot Info Guide
Training robots provide consistent repetition, controlled spin, and structured practice. They are valuable tools for players who want to refine technique, improve footwork, or train when partners are unavailable.
Robots differ widely in capability. Entry-level models focus on basic topspin and placement. Club-level robots introduce oscillation and spin variation. Advanced robots offer programmable drills that simulate match conditions.
When choosing a robot, consider your goals. Beginners benefit from steady repetition and predictable feeds. Juniors need volume and consistency. Advanced players require variability and realistic patterns. Coaches often prioritize programmability and durability.
Space, storage, and setup also matter. Some robots attach directly to the table, while others require separate stands. Noise level and ball capacity affect long training sessions.
A well-chosen robot supports focused practice and long-term improvement rather than replacing thoughtful training.
Robot Considerations
Throw Wheels
One, Two, Three or Four?
Robots with one throw wheel can shoot topspin, underspin, and sidespin.
Two throw wheels make it possible for independent spin and speed settings. This results in a great range of spin options – light to heavy topspin, underspin, or sidespin – or no spin shots.
Three and Four throw wheels provides the greatest versatility of all, including serve and volley in the same training sequence.
Oscillation
Controlled oscillation means you can set the robot to hit alternately only to the two widest points in the angle range, plus you can set the width of the angle.
With Random oscillation, the robot hits to the inner angles as well as the widest angles. Where the ball lands depends on the frequency and speed settings you have chosen.
Programmable oscillation is the most versatile. It achieves everything Controlled and Random oscillation does, plus you can program sequences of your choice for where the ball lands.
Serve / Spin Sequences
Serve & Return Sequences:
The Robot can be set to serve and return in the same sequence. For example, you can set a sequence to begin with a serve, then shoot returns to specific landing spots with spins of your choice for a realistic training pattern.
Topspin / Underspin Sequences:
Can shoot topspin shots and underspin shots (and other spins) in consecutive shots in the same sequence.
Other Technology
LCD Touch Screen / Smartphone App:
The LCD Touch Screen or Smart Phone App is a very easy and intuitive menu-based interface to control all functions of the robot.
Spin Indicator:
A Spin Indicator light shows you what kind of spin is on the ball.
Table Selection Guide
There are 4 Table Types, based on how the table folds for storage.
- Stationary without wheels on undercarriage. Both halves fold and store separately.
- Rollaway with two undercarriages and each half folds and rolls separately.
- Rollaway with one undercarriage and each half folds independently.
- Rollaway with one undercarriage, both halves always fold in and out together.
TABLE SHIPMENT: Tables are shipped by freight line. Delivery generally takes 2-3 weeks from date of order. The table is delivered to curbside and the delivery person will need assistance in unloading the table.
SHIPPING CHARGE: Price includes shipping to contiguous USA. Some locations may incur extra shipping charges. In that case, Paddle Palace will contact you before processing the order.
Table Considerations
Table Top
Look for tables with thicker tops. Thicker tops give a more consistent bounce and are less likely to warp after years of use.
Tables must be at least 3/4" to meet USATT and ITTF standards, and Paddle Palace recommends tops of at least 3/4".
The tables that are used in national and international competition normally have a minimum of 1" (30cm) tops.
Net Set
Built-in Net: Some tables have net posts permanently attached to the frame
(built-in net sets). These make setup and takedown a little quicker, but may not be as adjustable or sturdy as separate net and posts.
Separate Net Set: It can be easier later on to replace your net or net set if your net set is not built-in.
At Paddle Palace, the listed table price includes net set.
Quality vs Price
Consumers must balance their need for a quality table with their budget restraints. Often it makes sense to purchase a more expensive high-quality table that will have a long life. For some consumers price is the greater concern and they may choose lower price over durability.
At Paddle Palace, we carry primarily the mid-range to high-range quality tables because we want to ensure a high rate of satisfaction from our customers.
Table Structure / Assembly
Frame: Look for tables that have larger, sturdier legs and support frames. Sturdier frames contribute to a more consistent ball bounce and also help prevent the top from warping. If you set up and store your table regularly, a larger frame increases durability.
Wheels: Larger and stronger wheels are important particularly if you set up and store your table frequently.
Assembly: Some tables are pre-assembled and others require some assembly.
